About Silver Silkie

My name is Jane and my jewellery making journey began roughly 12 years ago, when I joined a weekly jewellery class in Derbyshire to learn to make silver and copper jewellery under the tuition of an experienced jeweller with a small group. The hobby took a hold and developed into a passion and I started to buy tools and equipment to experiment and practise at home. After badly scorching the oak dining table through soldering a rather large piece of silver, I moved into a little workshop space, still at home, and I continue to discover and experiment with different techniques.

I recently ventured out into the world of  local artisan fairs and joined The Derbyshire Makers mid 2023 and my work has been well received, so thank you to customers who have bought pieces to date.

I like to design and create wearable pieces of jewellery using textures and contrast. Working with ancient techniques including Keum Boo - the Korean practice of fusing 24K gold to silver.

Taking inspiration from ancient pieces and nature to make individual and unique pieces, all hand made in my home workshop in Derbyshire.

So why the name
Silver Silkie?

We keep pet chickens and one of the breeds of chicken usually found  dustbathing in the garden or trying to get in the house are Silkies, a breed of chicken that originates in China that  typically have fluffy plumage, black skins and bones, blue earlobes and 5 toes (where other chickens have 4).
They are friendly little birds that can be found scratching up my plants or sunbathing on the doormat trying to distract me while I make my jewellery. And they lay us delicious eggs when they're not entertaining us with their daft antics.
